Despite her best efforts, fear took root in her heart. She didn’t belong here.

. By the time she set foot at the edge of the neglected gardens, it was if her very soul was begging her to turn and flee.

Twisted shrubbery that had at one time resembled architectural structures littered the yard, disturbed by overgrown weeds or mounds of shattered statuary. This had been a family home, just as Edenburg castle had been hers. She wondered what could have driven the mortal occupants from their lush, palatial surroundings, and began to suspect the faeries of more treachery.

How easy would it be for them to “encourage” a human to abandon a place they found desirable? How simple to appropriate lands “haunted” by black spirits?

A flutter of white at a shattered window reminded her that actual haunts frequented this place—restless spirits who remained to torment any who spent the night in the former mansion. She’d also heard tales of “little people” making camp in the catacombs, drawn by the promise of half-Fey young. Leprechauns delighted in consuming the flesh of children, but faerie children were considered a particular delicacy. Rose had slaughtered her share of the wee creatures in the years she’d lived in Britain. She’d heard they’d fled back to Ireland for a time, but wouldn’t be surprised to learn they’d returned in the years since.

She would kill as many of the wicked little buggers as she could if they crossed her path tonight. And she w o uld encounter them if they had returned, for the catacombs were where she was bound. Hidden among the burial rooms below the ruins were holding cells that could contain any supernatural creature. If Pithwater was being kept here against his will, it was there she would find him.

Rose drew her sword as she circled to the back of the mansion, where the woods pressed in against the crumbling structure. There the secret entrance to the catacombs was concealed within an old human well.

Or at least it had been upon the occasion of her last visit to Davington Hill…

‘This is no time to hesitate,” she chided herself once she stood at the edge of the stones, staring down into the fathomless black of the enchanted well.

Faerie magic would spirit any who leapt from the well’s edge down into the catacombs.

She’d been just as uncertain the first time she’d jumped, but had landed safely. Of course, the Fey had been known to make changes in their spells occasionally. They might have removed the portal spell from the well and transferred it elsewhere. She could be leaping to her death—

“Oh, God’s blood. Jump, woman.” She jumped, her sword pressed tightly to her chest.

Three hours later, a part of Rose wished she h a d plummeted to her death. The catacombs reeked of decay and rot even more fiercely than they had fifty years prior. Some of the Fey had been busy of late. Scores of corpses, mostly human, littered the catacombs, in every state of decomposition imaginable.
